FAQ

Frequently asked questions

If you’re new to cognitive behavioural therapy, it’s normal to have a lot of questions - here I answer some of the most commonly asked. If you have a question that’s not answered on here,

please contact me

General

  • Do I need a referral?

No, you can self-refer by completing the short enquiry form on my contact page

  • Can I have someone with me?

Yes, if you would feel more comfortable having someone accompany you during your first online appointment for support, that is no problem. However, due to the therapy I offer being individualised I would recommend that subsequent sessions are attended alone.

  • Can you help me in a crisis?

I cannot offer crisis support so if you feel you require immediate support you can speak to your GP, call NHS Direct 111 or the emergency services 999. Alternatively, you can call the Samaritans for telephone support on 116 123.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations received 24 hours or more before your session, won’t incur a cancellation fee. Cancellations received less than 24 hours before your session or complete failure to notify, will be subject to a cancellation fee of 50% of your session cost.

Sessions

  • How much does a session cost?

My fees are competitively priced and reflect my training and experience. Each therapy session cost:

    Face to Face: £80

    Remote/Online: £70

  • How long is each session?

Most sessions will last 50-55 minutes unless agreed otherwise.

  • How many sessions will I need?

This will vary for one individual to another. Some people will only require 1-6 sessions, others may need more. I offer both short term and long-term therapy and we can discuss your needs in the initial appointment. You are not obliged to have a set number of sessions and we will have planned review appointments as we go along to ensure you are getting the most out of your therapy.

  • What is the first session like?

Starting therapy can sometimes be daunting, I will support you through this. Initially I will tell you about myself and introduce CBT. I will then collect some basic personal details. The rest of the session will be spent exploring your current difficulties and starting to explore what you would like to gain from therapy.

  • Can I prepare for the first session?

You don’t need to do anything specifically, but it can be helpful to think about what you would like to achieve from therapy.

  • Will there be homework?

Homework is a term often associated with CBT. This is because tasks between your sessions can give you the opportunity to practice the new skills you have developed. We will negotiate how much homework you have so it is manageable and helpful.

  • Is therapy online or face to face?

I offer both face to face CBT therapy or online therapy.

Therapy & you

  • Is therapy right for me?

If you are unsure about therapy, it can be useful to have an open conversation about this. Finding the right qualified therapist, and one you have a connection with, is important so that you feel able to speak to them freely. Through our initial conversation we will explore if CBT could be beneficial for you, so you can decide if you want to book a session.

  • Can you help if I don’t know what the problem is, or don’t have a diagnosis?

Yes it’s okay not to have a diagnosis. The idea of the initial appointments is to start understanding your problem in a way that we can identify maintaining processes. This is done collaboratively so you are supported at each stage.

  • Do I have to talk about my past?

CBT often focuses on the here and now, but it also explores our past in order to make sense of our belief system. If you don’t want to talk about your past that is okay - we can keep focused on present day problems.

  • How can I make the most of therapy?

Some people find it helpful to make notes during therapy or at the end of the session. Therapy will be more helpful if you feel ready to make some changes.

Confidentiality & Privacy

  • Are my therapy sessions confidential?

Yes, your therapy sessions are confidential. This means that I do not share your information with anyone, other than for my personal supervision requirements and then your name will not be identified. Confidentiality will only be broken if I feel you are at risk to yourself, or others and I think you require support outside of what I can offer you. I will always tell you if I will breach confidentiality and explain why. An example might be me requesting your GP offers you an appointment.

  • What information will you keep?

The information I keep about you is protected under The Data Protection Act 2018 and includes your contact details and therapy notes. These are securely stored on a GDPR-compliant cloud-based notes system called ‘Write-Upp’. In order to be compliant with my insurance, client records are kept on this system for 7 years.

  • What is your website privacy policy?

I have a privacy policy that explains how I control, process, handle and protect your personal information while you browse or use this website. Please click here to read this policy.
